Why reach out to a counsellor?
Distress can be present in our lives in a variety of ways. Whether you are going through a rough transition, have suffered a serious loss, or are struggling to find your way to clarity, life inevitably brings all of us to times of struggle.
Often we can brave these tough times alone. Many people choose this route because they are uncertain about or unfamiliar wih working with a counsellor. These tough times, however, will often go more smoothly and resolve more quickly when you work with a skilled collaborator like a Registered Clinical Counsellor to get support, understand your own patterns, and regain your well-being.
Some typical signs, symptoms, and topics that working with a counsellor may be helpful for:
you feel like your struggle is to big or to delicate to talk to friends about
struggling with a significant transition in your life
feeling alone or lonely
feeling under-confident or unclear about some aspect of yourself
experiencing lower energy and enthusiasm than is typical for you
you find yourself numbing yourself more often with things like alcohol, social media scrolling, eating, or TV binging
you feel more symptoms of anxiety or low mood than is typical for you
you are struggling to know what to do next
feeling too uncertain to make significant decisions
relationships feel more difficult
you say mean things to yourself
you are not sure how to handle or change a problematic relationship
you worry that there is something wrong with you
your challenging childhood still brings up strong feelings
the family you grew up with is still very challenging to interact with
anxiety or depression symptoms
struggles in your intimate relationship(s) are causing stress or strife
You might find yourself thinking things like:
“I don’t know what to do.”
“I feel stuck.”
“I want to learn more about myself and my patterns. I wonder if I can make some changes?”
“I feel very bad about myself when I am with my sibling/parent/friend/etc”
“I feel shaky and uncertain.”
“I feel overwhelmed”
“I always feel so obligated. I want to say no more often than I do.”
“I am curious about how my early life impacted me.”
“I am drinking more than I want to, but can’t seem to make the change. I wonder why?”
“I have a secret I don’t tell anyone about. It is weighing more and more heavily on me.”
“My childhood was quite tough. I want to explore that and feel better than I do now.”
You may also notice things like:
Feeling unsettled
Strong emotions
You are resisting having important conversations
More easily overwhelmed
You are avoiding making important decisions in your life
You are feeling uncomfortable in some relationships
Higher stress than usual
Difficulty prioritizing your own health and wellness
A yearning for a deeper understanding of yourself
The result is that you feel stuck in some important ways in your life. You may not know how to get more clarity and move forward.
How can counselling help?
I help by working with you to identify your destructive thoughts. We notice connections between your thoughts and your feelings, and how they influence your behaviours. We work on problem-solving difficult situations. Together we look for patterns in your life, acknowledge your stressors, and learn new skills and coping strategies. I help you to understand how our brains work, and how to work with your brain instead of against it. I help by creating a safe relationship in which to explore your particular history, life situations, and ways of being so you can learn about yourself and feel empowered to make the changes that are important to you. I help by making space for uncomfortable emotions and come to understand what messages they are telling you.
The goal of therapy is to help you get to a place where you have the energy, information, and motivation to work towards your goals, enjoy the pleasures of life again, feel like your relationships are meaningful, and feel good about yourself.

Online video sessions
Online counselling sessions are like any other counselling session: they start on time, end 50 minutes later, wrap up with booking a new appointment, sessions are paid with a credit card kept securely on your file, and you receive your receipt via email right away. You have the option to book your own appointments online.
You receive an easy to use link before the session, and need to find a private place to hold your session in — with an internet connection. If no internet connection is available, you can request a phone session.
